Frequently Asked Questions

Some frequently asked questions about the service that you may have questions about

How Does the VA Disability Rating System Work?
The VA assigns disability ratings in increments of 10% (0%, 10%, 20%, etc.) based on the severity of service-connected conditions. Your combined VA disability rating determines your monthly, tax-free compensation.

However, VA math is different from standard math—disability percentages are not simply added together. Instead, the VA uses a percentages-of-percentages method, which applies each new rating to the veteran's remaining "healthy" portion.

Here is how it works:

- A 10% disability means the VA considers you 90% healthy.
- If you receive another 10% disability, it is applied to the remaining 90%, meaning 10% of 90% = 9%.
- The first 10% + new 9% = 19%, which is then rounded to 20%.

This system makes it increasingly difficult to reach 100%, requiring higher-rated conditions to impact the final rating significantly. Use our VA Disability Calculator to determine your combined rating and potential monthly compensation instantly!
Why Does VA Math Make It Harder to Reach 100%?
Due to the descending calculation method, reaching 100% becomes progressively more challenging as a veteran’s combined rating increases.

For example, if a veteran has:

- 50% PTSD
- 50% Sleep Apnea
- 20% Diabetes
- 20% Back Condition

These would total 140% in standard math, but the combined rating is only 80% in VA math.
How Can I Increase My VA Disability Rating?
If you believe your VA rating is too low, you may:

- File for an increase if your condition worsens.
- Appeal a low rating by submitting new medical evidence.
- Claim secondary conditions linked to your primary disability.

Consult an Accredited Advocate to explore the best path to maximize your benefits.
What Other Factors Affect My VA Compensation?
Beyond your disability ratings, the VA considers additional factors when determining your compensation:

- Bilateral Factor: If you have disabilities affecting both arms or both legs, you may receive an additional percentage boost.
- Dependents: If you have a spouse, children, or dependent parents, your monthly compensation increases.
- Unemployability (TDIU): If your disabilities prevent you from working, you may qualify for 100% compensation, even if your rating is lower.
What If My VA Disability Claim Was Denied?
A denial does not mean you have to stop fighting! You can appeal your VA rating by:

- Submitting new medical evidence to support your claim.
- Requesting a Higher-Level Review if you believe VA made an error.
- Filing a Board of Veterans’ Appeals claim for a formal review.
